Soft Structure No. 2
Digital design meets traditional silversmithing
Soft Structure No. 2 extends the structural and material investigations initiated in Soft Structure No. 1. The work develops the relationship between digital fabrication and traditional craftsmanship through a highly articulated, organic form.
The curved structure modulates light across the silvered exterior, producing a subdued, almost lunar luminosity. Complexity is treated as a structural parameter, determined by the frequency of transitions between concave and convex arches. Rather than reducing the geometry to accommodate production, the work tests the threshold at which artistic articulation remains materially and technically resolvable.
The outer shell is composed of twelve identical elements, digitally designed and 3D-printed. Each component is hand-finished prior to mould-making and casting in brass. The cast elements are soldered into a unified structure and subsequently silver-plated. In collaboration with a Danish silversmith, an inner bowl is introduced in the final stage, establishing continuity between contemporary digital processes and established craft traditions.
As in No. 1, repetition operates as a generative system. Identical units accumulate into a coherent form in which subtle variations emerge through manual processes, introducing material nuance within computational precision.
