Soft Structure No. 2
The piece explores the relationship between digital fabrication and traditional silversmithing through a highly articulated, organic form. The curved geometry reflects light softly across the silver surface, creating an atmospheric, almost lunar quality where form and material appear inseparable.
Complexity is treated as a design parameter, defined by the frequency of shifts between concave and convex arches. Rather than simplifying the geometry for production, the work investigates how far complexity can be pushed while remaining materially and technically feasible.
The outer shell consists of 12 identical elements, digitally designed and 3D-printed by Mikkel Nielsen, then hand-polished to serve as the basis for casting. From these prints, moulds are produced and each element is cast in brass, soldered together and silver-plated. In collaboration with a Danish silversmith, an inner bowl is added in the final stage, connecting contemporary digital processes with traditional craft knowledge.
